a review of health related walking provision in northern ireland and the scoping of development needs and recommendations for future action. has been commissioned by the public health agency to undertake this review which will run to the end of january 2011. given the logistics of the review, has sub-contracted caan to assist in the information gathering process. given the acknowledged benefits of regular exercise, the walking for health programme aims to encourage people, particularly those who take little exercise, to undertake short regular walks in their communities. the northern ireland physical activity strategy, published in 1996, highlighted the need to promote physical activity targeted at the sedentary population and identified walking as a key activity to be promoted. the then health promotion agency for northern ireland (hpa) supported this strategy by developing a walking campaign with resource materials, and facilitated a get active in the community small grants programme with an emphasis on supporting new groups to develop walking and cycling programmes. walk leader training courses have been provided to a wide range of adult volunteers and staff working within various community, voluntary and health care settings. over the past eight years approximately 1500 people have trained as walk leaders and recent records suggest that approximately 1000 walk leaders are currently active across northern ireland. these trained walk leaders are encouraged and supported to develop and sustain new walking for health groups within their local community or work setting. to date approximately 200 walking groups have been established as a direct result. the review will firstly examine the current position with the intention of outlining the structure and delivery of local walking schemes in northern ireland, assessing the training, management and support for walk leaders, and determining the present involvement of a range of regional organisations in the promotion of walking for health. the review will also consider the potential for development and enhancement through identifying the demand for future provision, obtaining stakeholders’ views on plausible improvements, and exploring potential links with partners for the future delivery of walking for health initiatives. opinions and suggestions on these matters from the broad range of stakeholders will largely be gathered through a comprehensive interview process and a widely circulated questionnaire. it will then be possible to consider a range of options for the development of an enhanced walking for health programme including matters such as coordination, training, delivery structures, promotion and funding and a workshop event will be held as part of this process. details will be widely circulated in due course. arising from all this, the review will identify priorities for future development ensuring that consideration has been given to the new and emerging structures or groupings brought about through the current process of the reform of public administration within northern ireland. finally, the intention is to provide an agenda for action to cover the period 2011- 2015. should you have any comments on the review or the workings of the current scheme, and/or wish to be included in the formal consultation process, please contact [email protected] . close new: walking for health -
